Stuff Joe Collector Likes: #3 "Hits"

There is a general assumption that Joe is a pretty shrewd hobbyist. And for the most part, history has proven this to be true. But Joe Collector has one great weakness: Cards with stuff on them.

Just like with ultra-premium products and chrome stock cards, Joe believes that a trading card with a piece of a jersey worn in a game by some AA-level second-string catcher is actually worth something -- eBay be damned.

Joe Collector will always lose his mind for game used anything. He'll lustfully rip through a box of cards, casually tossing aside the "worthless" base cards, rookies, and minor inserts in a mad dash to get at what he's really after: The "hits."

Never mind the fact that all those base cards are worth more than the Xavier Nady and Bill Hall game jersey cards he received ever will be. But Joe doesn't care, just so long as he gets his promised "TWO MEMORABILIA CARDS IN EVERY BOX! (on average)"

NADY-JO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is wrong with autographs and game used? Everyone needs to focus their collections of something since it's impossible to collect every card out there.

For me it is autographs and game used cards. I just like the way they look. I'm not really interested in the base cards. Also why rip Nady? We can't all afford to get Jeter / Arod / Pujols "hits".

It is exciting to pull a game used card or an autographed card. Or have you just forgotten that? Although I no longer purchase boxes, my focus will continue to be getting game used and autographed cards. If that makes me a Joe Collector, then fine.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one.
I wish more people just enjoyed cards and didn't only care about "hits."

This one you are mostly wrong on. I say mostly because a good 95% of the collecting base does exactly what you say here. They collect the hits. Now, the difference between a JC and a person of the PP (privileged portion, as I call them) is that they get super duper ridiculously excited about said hits. They also need to post them on a message boards with the M-word and a bunch of exclamation points...

Gellman,

That's kind of what I'm getting at here. I enjoy pulling jersey cards, like the next collector. But it not the sole reason why I collect, and I certainly don't go JC on the Beckett boards when I pull one.

Besides, THIS IS ALL SATIRE!

So what am I? I like base cards, get excited over getting some parallels and "hits" but with a family feel like $7-8/pack is expensive.

I am I a Joe Collector or not. I enjoy beckett but know that I can never ever get the same price selling a card that is priced in the mag. I have bought cards on ebay but never have sold them. I enjoy getting auto cards or game used but would trade them for a Miguel Cabrera if that is the last card to complete a set. I trade insert cards for base cards to complete sets and yea I do keep a database of all my cards. So am I a Joe Collector.
