Stuff Joe Collector Likes: #2 Ultra-premium Products.

Joe Collector can’t enough of ultra-premium products; especially Upper Deck Premier, Topps Triple Threads, Bowman Sterling and the like. The reason why he loves them so much can be due to a number of factors.

Fact #1 - 90% of card collectors (Joes and non-Joes, alike) have paid more than $25 for a brand new pack of cards at some point in their life.

Fact #2 - The superiority Joe likes without having to rip too many packs - two packs of UD Black is easier than a full box of UD Goudey. (With just as much, if not more, of that MOJO!!!!!!! they crave.)

Fact #3 - Joe hates cards that are actually affordable - so he buys the boxes that every other collector in his demographic wants to bust. (What a rebel!)

Fact #4 - Joe earns credibility with his fellow collectors by being into cards from really, really, expensive brands. The higher the MSRP, the more the street cred - “Oh you liked Allen & Ginter? Yeah, I heard it's nice, but I didn’t buy any of it. I’m really into Donruss Celebrity Cuts now. It got great reviews on the Beckett boards. Lots and lots of MOJO!!!!!!!”

Gee, guess I'm sort of a Joe Collector. You see I Do like to occasionally splurge on high end products, as well as the "low end' stuff as well. What does this mean? I also spend the majority of my collecting dollars buying vintage star cards; is there even a name for me?
If I avoid one thing like the plague, it is anyproduct with celebrity crap in it...

As far as I can recall, I've never paid more than $10 on a pack of cards. Even then I regret spending more than $5 per pack about 75% of the time.

Heck, $25 is about halfway to what I'm willing to pay for a whole BOX, never mind one pack.

Ha, I don't think I've ever spent more than $5 on a pack of cards. Of course, I usually buy my packs at Wal Mart and buy hobby boxes on eBay. I will also never buy any packs or boxes of these ridiculously priced products. I'll just look for the individual cards that I want from those products on eBay, which I'll be able to buy for a small fraction of what I would have spent on a single pack.

So I like chrome and refractors, but not ridiculously priced packs. Am I still a JC?

I guess I missed Episode 1: the Phantom Menace. Can you shoot me an email with the link?

And yes, JCs do like high priced crap. They also like grading said cards.

Only time I've ever bought a pack that costs more than $10 is when it's a VINTAGE pack that might contain a HOFer RC.

And I haven't been that stupid since my daughter was born.

So what do the "non-Joe's" (or true hobbyists)of the world collect? base upper deck? hannah montana?

I spent $45 on a pack of 2006 Bowman Sterling and I felt I couldn't lose, since I'd be paying for the hits I'd get out of a typical box.

I probably got about $10 back in cards [two prospect autos, one or two base cards and one relic] and thought, 'what a bummer, I'm such a Joe Collector.'

I didn't do it because of that break, but my limit is probably around $3 for a pack of cards and about $50 for a box of cards.

I'd rather pick off cards from the commons bins [at card shops/shows] and maybe find singles on Ebay I'd like to pull from any particular product.
